Butthole Surfers

Electriclarryland

Count me in with the rest of the yahoos that joined the Butthole Surfers' bandwagon after their last release, Independent Worm Saloon. I just couldn't get into their bizarre sound until that album. On it, they became very musically focussed, and dropped a bit of the potty humor. Don't get me wrong, I still like potty humor, and the Surfers still retain a tinge of it. Trust me, I'm the last guy that wants these guys to get too serious. However, they really have evolved as musicians and songwriters. Electriclarryland is actually a bit more experimental than Independent Worm Saloon. This is apparent on songs like "Pepper" and "Jingle of a Dog's Collar". However, the Butthole Surfers really shine on the more chaotic tracks like "Ulcer Breakout", "L.A.", and "Birds". Their unbridled energy and desire to be strange is their trademark, and that's what they deliver on Electriclarryland. Gibby Haynes' vocals and Paul Leary's musical direction are bold! Definitely give Electriclarryland a try, you may be pleasantly surprised. Bill Gunsmith
