Bleach: 35

A typical starting album with 1 or 2 good songs and the rest an experiment. I was personally disappointed with the screaming and simplistic nature of it, but a good start to a soon to become premier band in the 90's. Only a die hard fan should buy this C.D.

Nevermind: 90

The peak of Cobain’s career which thrust him into the spotlight. Every song is excellent and unique. The C.D is kicked off with "Smells Like Teen Spirit" which sets a rip roaring adventure that doesn’t quit till the end. There are so many singles on this C.D that have been made famous it reminds me of Jimi Hendrix’s "Are You Experienced",without one bad song in both of these c.d.s If you don’t have Nevermind then get it because you’ll never regret it.

In Utero: 83

Once you start listening to this C.D you can’t get enough of it. The mood changes and sweet tunes make it one of the better c.d.s out there. Every song is different and interesting, although a few of them have to be skipped before you get use to them. Definitely an awesome C.D worth every penny. I have listened to it almost every day and it still holds my interest.

Incesticide: 20

It seems like Cobain had a brain drain because his last C.D erased everything that was going for him to reveal a simplistic, boring experience back to where he started, maybe even worse. I wondered why other Nirvana fans would ever talk about Incesticide, but now I know. An incredibly disappointing C.D with only one mediocre song of the previous Cobain. A damper to what was accomplished before.

Unplugged In New York: 80

A good C.D of the "light" Nirvana. Cobain’s vocals soar and they go through some material of other bands which is interesting. A repeat of what was previously done, but a good C.D nevertheless.

From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah: 80

An interesting C.D with Nirvana put in a box. Good live performances that capture the music in concert. Good listening because the screaming was minimal and many awesome tunes were put out. A repeat, but something else for Nirvana’s fans to savor.

This is a Nirvana essay by Ansely O'Connor. Enjoy!!

Kurt Donald Cobain was born on February 20th 1967 to Donald and Wendy Cobain in the small town of Hoquiam Washington, about 140 km from Seattle. Soon afterwards he and his family moved to Aberdeen, a logging town near Seattle.

As a child, Kurt had bad bronchitis but he was also so energetic that his doctor had to prescribe him Ritalin. In 1975 Kurt’s parents divorced and he and his younger sister went to live with their mother. After this, Kurt became increasingly withdrawn and difficult. He was quoted saying later that he never felt loved or secure again. As he became more difficult his mother felt that she couldn’t handle him so she sent him to live with his father who also felt he couldn’t handle Kurt. He was then shuttled back and forth between various relatives and at one point homeless and living under a bridge (which later became the inspiration to his song "Something in the way"). As a teenager Kurt didn’t have many friends and spent most of his time in his room with his friend, and future band mate, Krist Novoselic listening to music such as the Sex Pistols and Joy Division. In May of 1985 Kurt dropped out of high school and moved to Olympia, Washington.

During this time Kurt formed many bands, none of which were around for a long period of time. First came the bands Fecal Matter and Brown Cow put together by Kurt and his friend Dave Crover with the rest of the members always changing. Then, Kurt got together with Krist and formed a band called Stiff Woodies which featured Kurt on drums and Krist on guitar and vocals. Following the addition of Steve Newman on bass the band changed their name to The Sellouts. Later Steve left and Krist took up the bass. Kurt played the guitar and they had a man named Aaron Burckhard on drums. This band went through six names (Skid Row, Ted Ed Fred, Bliss, Throat Oyster, Pen Cap Chew, and Windowpane) but finally settled on the name Nirvana. This band also went through several drummers but finally hired Dave Grohl in1990. These three would change the sound of music in the nineties forever.

In June of 1989 Nirvana’s first album Bleach was released and in September of 1991 Nevermind, which propelled Nirvana into stardom with its first single "Smells Like Teen Spirit", followed. Nevermind went on to sell ten million copies and make a reported $550 million making Kurt, Krist, and Dave overnight millionaires. Kurt wasn’t ready for stardom and was having a hard time coping with the spotlight. As Krist said: "Kurt was the kind of guy who would have been happy playing in clubs all his life." In the early 1990’s Kurt turned to heroin. He said he used it as a shield against the demands of touring and to stop the pain of stomach ulcers. In touring for Nevermind Nirvana toured with Pearl Jam and the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the States and began a world tour in 1992.

On February 24 1992 Kurt married fellow rock star Courtney Love in Waikiki, Hawaii and on August 18 1992 their daughter Frances Bean Cobain was born. Shortly after Kurt had to be treated in the hospital for heroin abuse. In December of 1992 Nirvana’s third album, Incesticide, was released and in September of the following year In Utero was released.

In 1993 Nirvana played MTV unplugged with covers of songs by the Meat Puppets and Leadbelly along with their own slower stuff. In February of 1994 Nirvana started their European tour and, on the 29th played what became their final show in Munich. In March Kurt was rushed to the hospital in a coma after he tried to commit suicide by swallowing fifty prescription painkillers along with champagne. The next day he woke from the coma and asked for a milkshake. With the encouragement of Courtney, Kurt’s friends, and his managers, Kurt entered a detox program in L.A. After only a few days in the program Kurt left, not telling anyone. A missing persons report was filed by his mother. A few days later, on April 5th Kurt barricaded himself into his Seattle mansion, put a shotgun in his mouth, and pulled the trigger. Two days later Courtney Love was taken to the hospital because of a drug overdose. On bail, she checked in a rehab center but left the next day when a friend told her of Kurt’s death.

Kurt Cobain was found dead by an electrician who had come to the house to install a security system. When no one answered he went around back and saw what he at first believed to be a mannequin until he noticed a bit of blood by his ear.

When the police went into the house and found Kurt they also found a suicide note he had written addressed to Courtney and Frances, then 19 months old. This note was read by Courtney, two days after Kurt’s body had been found, at a memorial service held in Seattle. 5000 people gathered and lit candles, burned their flannel shirts (because, as a shirt of Kurt’s worn by his mother at his funeral said, "Grunge Is Dead".), and fought with police.

In November of the same year Nirvana: Unplugged in New York was released and in 1996 Krist and Dave put together a compilation of songs from live shows and released them on the album From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah.

After only three years people still mourn Kurt and gather every year on the anniversary of his death to pay their respects to one of the most brilliant musicians of his time. Kurt Cobain spoke for the youth of this generation, the one before and probably the next as well and will never be forgotten. He will remain in the hearts and ears of people for years and years to come.
