Their first was their best and most diverse which kicked off one of the most successful careers in 90’s rock. Vedder has such a unique and distinct voice that it’s a unique sound compared to others. Each band member ca play their instruments well and this is a rarity nowadays in rock. A good tune after another makes Pearl Jam one of the most popular bands today.
Vs. 78
Ten was then followed by Vs. Which is similar to, but more aggressive then Ten. The band follows their same style with new hit singles like "Daughter" and some harder rock like "Go". This makes the c.d. an interesting adventure. A band’s success relies mainly on the band’s ability to put out singles which is exactly what has made Pearl Jam the successful band that they are today.
Vitology: 80
After this was Vitology which is darker, in my opinion, than the first two, but equally or even more interesting. Spin The Black Circle is one of the heaviest rock that Pearl Jam has made. It really sticks with you because of the anthems like "Whipping" and "Spin the Black Circle". It has excellent listening power, and provides some great hard hitting rock. The only drawback about the record are about two or three songs that are incredibly annoying. This is one of those discs which sticks to you forever. It's just such a strong effort of a band that's reinventing themselves. Ten, and Verses reminds me of the 80's too much, but Vitology is the music for today. It's probally one of the most classic discs because of the variety of hard rock and soft tunes. Some songs make you want to get up and scream with him, and others make you sit back, relax, and think about life. With such a great instrumental presence, and one of the best voices in rock, I don't see why you would want to not buy music from this band. A lot of critics put down this disc, but I'm raising it higher than any of the other discs because they were inventive and daring enough to become less mainstream. That takes a lot of guts, and I'm really happy they have made this change. A satisfying c.d. for any listener who enjoys the harder side of the rock spectrum.
No Code 60
No Code reveals that Pearl Jam isn’t going to explore new alley ways and will not change for a while. This is an average c.d., but for an Pearl Jam fan another treat. For me I feel that they need to move on. We’ll see if they take my advice and come out with an interesting c.d. in a few years.
Yield: 80
No longer is Pearl Jam everyone's band. After selling only 1 million discs in No Code compared to 9 million for Ten, the stats seem to indicate that they are going down hill. I felt a sad pity that they decided against evolving towards the Vitology harder rock style. In Yield, they have decided to carry on from where they left. Away with the popular culture stuff, it's time to get down to business. The real music. Listening to this disc as background music really didn't appeal to my ear, but after closly examining and sorting through their heavy beat, I found a lot to offer. Each song has something unique to offer, and each melody is distinct and beautiful. I really enjoyed the transitions between soft and harder music, which only Metallica and Pearl Jam have the ability to do. The instrumental portion of the disc is stellar, and there are some great guitar riffs. Veddar has one of the most amazing voices in rock at the moment, and all those people who are stealing his style and selling tons of albums is really starting to piss me off. When you want to hear the best music, always go to the source, because Pearl Jam's ideas are more experimental, interesting, and original. It's like buying the cragmont brand in place of a Dr. Pepper. It just doesn't cut it. There are many pensive tunes, but there is also a good variety of songs that are there for when you're pissed off. It's one of the better popular music discs that I've reviewed in a long time, and I'm happy that I can still be a Pearl Jam fan. Check this disc out, because it's some of the greatest work in the past few years.
