Radiohead

OK Computer 79

This was a record that I bought because it had gotten decent reviews by most magazines, and publications. They didn't tell me much about it, so I thought I would. For those of us who are new to Radiohead, their music can be classified as alternative. They are alternative in the sense that they have guitars, vocals, and drums. Their main influences stem from a mix between Nirvana and U2. I think that some of their guitar riffs and drumming have been drawn from Nirvana. This is accompanied with U2 style vocals. Long, drawn out, soaring vocals are the best ways to describe them. Although the vocals seem to be similar to some soft rock singers, he uses his voice well with the accompaniment of the rock-based music. Not many bands can combine both the vocals and instruments to combine into a symbiotic relationship. I think their effective use of the rock genre is one of their strong points. Their melodies are affective and sometimes beautiful, although I often feel that they are bordering what other bands have already accomplished. They will go into melodies that are similar in shape and notes to others, but then the band expands on these ideas and eventually makes them their own. I wondered why they were rated so highly, and it's because it's an all around well-done album with a solid base of songs. I think it's worth it to invest in this band because they are an unusual case where the screaming and yelling has been transformed into soaring melodies. I think it's cool that they aren't falling for this trap. It's a solid album and is worth your money.
