Beatles: Well, what can you say? They significantly developed rock n
roll music from the raw primitive origins of Little Richard and Elvis.
Nothing against either of those two, but the 50's sound had a very
predictable chord structure(usually only three or four chords. The
Beatles took this fifty's style and added more sophisticated hooks,
rhythms, and lyrics. Combined with a fresh sound, energy, and an appeal
to young teenagers(especially ladies) the Beatles were sensational.
Over time, the Beatles continued to develop their song-writing and
arrangements to incorporate a wide variety of stylings in their music
that influences groups up until the present day whether it be Heavy
Metal, Alternative, Folk, Country, and Jazz. So many recording acts
have covered Beatles songs. In addition, vocal wise their four voices
blend together in perfect harmony or as separate pieces on some
occasions. Whereas the Beatles were not known for great instrumental
prowess, their fines songs, voices, and arrangements have earned them a
major place in the world of rock n roll and no music collection is
complete without one of their recordings.
Beatles 65: 83
One of their earlier recordings. The Lennon/McCartney
song-writing team was going full throttle at this point generating such
winners at Baby's In Black, No Reply, I Feel Fine, and I'll Follow The
Sun. John hogs a bit too much of the lead vocal spotlight as he sings
seven of the eleven songs including the first four. Otherwise, these
songs are a joy to listen to. And the arrangements too. How about the
fuzz tone guitar effect that Opens I Feel Fine. And the vocal
harmonies(especially on Mr. Moonlight) they belnd and they soar. A nice
representation of the mid 60's Beatle Sound.
Revolver :85
Now this album has more vocal balance. And George Harrison
emerged as a song writing force contributing three fine numbers as well
as a fine sitar on such tracks as Love You Too and Tommorow Never Knows.
Again the songs are pretty direct and to the point with little
instrumental ellaboration. But these Beatles use so many creative
arrangements that they hide their weakness well. Eleanor Rigby is
somewhat depressing and Got To Get You Into My Life is a bit overplayed
but otherwise another fine collection.
Rubber Soul :86
This album seems to be driven my the fine acoustic
instruments. Yes, the Beatles do play the electric ones but you can
feel the soul in each of the vocal performances. Now I wonder where
they got the Rubber part from. Anyway, what can I say? More great
music and another recommended selection.
Yesterday And Today :88
Yes, this is the one with Yesterday. When
loving the Beatles music was such an easy game to play. Now I need a
place to hideaway.(Thats from mos of the crappy rap, alternative, and
metal thats corrupting the airways). Yes I'll believe in Yesterday.
And Drive My Car, Daytripper, What Goes On, And Your Bird Can Sing, and
countless others. Whats the use of saying much more. Just buy it and
smile.
Seargeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band 77
I know this is allegedly a landmark album. And there are definitely
some new sounds on it as well. However, the tone from song to song is
way too sappy for my tastes. She's Leaving Home is just so depressing
with the string arrangements and With A Little Help From My Friends and
Getting Better are just a bit too giddy for my ears. A Day In The Life
is the real gem on this record as it stands out from any music the
beatles had recorded previously with those haunting special effects.
Those who love everything the Beatles have ever done will think I'm a
total idiot but others who may be more objective will know what I am
talking about.
White Album 96
Probably one of the greatest recordings ever made. The styles are
mostly rock n roll but include country, jazz, blues, and more yet they
blend so well. I know at this time the band members were not getting
along but sometimes adversity brings out the best in musicians.
Fleetwood Mac proved that with the Rumours collection in the seventies
just as the Beatles did with this gem. Except for the tape loop
Revolution 9(and even parts of that are interesting) this disc is darn
near perfect.
Abbey Road 92
The second best effort ever by the Beatles. Paul McCartney's influence
seems to dominate this record specifically with the suite of songs on
side 2. However, the other band members contribute many gems as well.
How about Something and Here Comes The Sun by George, Come Together by
John. Even Ringo's Octopusses Garden is extremely well writen. The
controversial but beautiful album covers completes this classic
recording.
Let It Be 82
Whereas this recording does not compare to Abbey Road or White Album, it
still has its merits. Again, a little too much from Paul. When I listen
to the Beatles I like to hear all their voices. None the less Let It Be
and The Long And Winding Road are beautiful songs. The guitars sound
great on this album. And Billy Preson contributes a nice organ on
several of the cuts. A worthy buy but not their best effort.
Hey Jude 80
A collection of Beatle singles that are mostly from late in their
career. This one has the fast loud Revolution, Paperback Writer, Can't
Buy Me Love, and many more. As usual the songs are top notch but the
sequence just sounds like a compilation. The style varies but not to
the degree of oh let say White Album or Abbey Road. But its still a
worthy collection.
